12. Finally, final year

Final year was completely filled with project team selection, project meetings by team members and all the other things related to projects.

We had to do two projects one in 7th Sem on Java and one main projects which should be done in one year(i.e, 7th and 8th sems). Teams were made(according to attendence register) for both the projects and the teams would decide among themselves and do two projects.

Our "P" group, as PSC (Prashanth SC) called it, was consisting of 6 people with names starting from "P". The only thing i did not like about the team was that there were no girls in our team.

Project without girls? YUCK!

Everybody was busy in project meetings, discussing about their project. But people "P" group never met until time came to submit the project report and implementation.

When time came, everybody met to decide which project to do and who can do it for us.
An unanimous answer came "Vikas". But which project? some body suggested "intranet chatting".

Done. Everyone agreed.

Project started, everybody read little about chatting software and used to write some code which never worked. Some ideas poured in from outside to check out the Java-Complete reference book for Scrabble game and it has one in built chatting software.

Leave out the AWT, networking packages, none in team knew Java. We started coding(copying) from the book. Nothing seemed to work.

Two days left for demo. We brought in Vikas to help us out.

Of course not without "bribing" him with a cup of cold coffee in night. He started coding and even finished doing it in 2 or 3 hours. We wanted to make a chatting software but ended up in making a "broadcasting" software (as it was easy).

While, some lines in Kannada (as i dont want to call them as poems) could be found in my scribbling pad. Here its in English ;)

Ninaginta ninna nenape chenda,
nenapada iruttave kanna munda.

Gelati,
nee jothegiddare kasta-dukha ella doora,
nee illavadare ondondu kshaNavu bhaara.

We also had to decide and start our final year main project. We were interested in "Design and implementation of DBMS on Linux" project. Every one except Pritvi accepted, as he was not present for the project meeting.

After he came to know about the project, told,"Abey, saalo, abhi isko nahi kar sake toh kidhar se bhi utha bhi nahi sakte. Yeh kaisa project karne ko decide kiya".

Somehow the project started and again Vikas helped us to design the project.

I used to call up home every sunday. Till now, i used to dial correct number
(connecting to home); but now whenever i pick up phone my fingers automatically dialed number which got connected to Krishna Sundari (yes, Raji). After talking to her, i used to call up home by typing the numbers carefully.

Prashant(SC) used to come early in afternoons to work on the project we all had chosen. But only to find us sleeping(as we would have worked all night). Every day he used to come and inform us when he is meeting next. Fed up of this, he once wanted to work in night and stayed back too.

Pundalik and me had a strange routine. We used to wake up at 5 pm and start working till 10 pm then go for dinner. Then we would work till 5 in morning and have chitranna at Pawar's or bisi idli at Ashok's hotel.

Prashant also had to undergo this routine to work with us. He had come over without having dinner. We made him sit all night and code for some insert, update queries. We used to discuss a lot and code first for backend and then make it work from frontend (a editor based on ncursors library done by Prashant). We took him to Pawar's hotel where i ordered for chitranna and Pundalik ordered for Egg fried rice which Pawar prepares in the same kadai. Next Pundalik ordered for a dosa and i ordered for omlete (needless to say, prepared in same pan). Seeing all this Prashant refused to have anything. He decided to stay alive by eating a packet of Good Day biscuits. By the time we finished our breakfast Nandini coffee bar was open we had Horlicks and returned to room.

Prashant had to spent this night staying awake and hungry.

11. Krishna Sundari

We were in sixth sem...

Till now i had not even scored a first class. i was just scoring a second class.

Every sem i used to decide that i would score a first class this time but end up scoring same second class.

In this sem we had to do a project on VB and Oracle which was alloted by 3D randomly.

To learn VB and Oracle, some of us joined Zen Computers. Course was about 3-4 months duration.
At Zen, apart from teaching us, they would also help us getting the project completed.

Mr.Suresh was our Oracle teacher here. He was a wonderful guy. He had a tremendous Oracle knowledge and would teach us in down to earth kannada language; it was a typical Davangere kannada.
"hangalale.....hingale...."

We learnt and enjoyed the course very much.

Here, i came across my classmate, Raji, Rajeshwari. Everyone in class called her Amisha Patel. But for me she was down to earth Raji.

Usually, i just used to see her but never had enough courage to talk; just used to see her curious jinke kannu, just used to see her laugh a mallige beladingala mandahaasa, just used to hear her talk like music...very sweet.

During the course in Zen, we began to talk. We talked about the projects assigned, we talked about college. We talked a lot..

For the first time in my engg. life i talked to a girl!!

Even with a dark complexion (usual Davangere color!!), she looked good and charming.

Harry and i used to call her Krishna Sundari.

Raji looked beautiful in that yellow color dress. Till that day i hated yellow color; but that day i dont know why yellow looked so beautiful ..... was it because of her??...
....well, can't say...

Naah, this was not love...

may be just an attraction as she was first girl whom i talked so much....

Still i believe love is like barter business system.... just give and take..

May be i am looking for a fairy love story....or an unconditional love.....(oops, a typical Aerian!!)

Apart from Raji, i met Swapna. Later on she became my sister; tied rakhi twice.i used to call her 'sis' and she called me 'bro'.(hope she is not repenting about this still!!)

10. Linux teaches Love

This was fifth semester in which we all had to write an editor in Linux using C/C++.

In this matter only the person who could help us out was Cyber. He was punter in Linux. He was the one who taught us what is Linux, how to install it, how to run it and use it. It was as if we were with a hard core Linux hacker.

He used to give sessions on Linux. Milkshake boys (yeah, we) had even brought a black board and chalk for the session to make it feel like class room!

Every evening after college hours and having snacks/tea we would have these sessions. Eventually it shifted to Saturdays and Sundays.

We were so involved with Linux that we breathe Linux we ate Linux and we drank Linux !

Now the project on the editor began.

He used to teach us how to write editor by writing chunks of programs. Everybody in college knew him and was a famous person by now (Everybody called him by name ‘Linux’!!).

Initially he began to teach Linux to a girl by name Neha. Eventually all our sessions were stopped and this time was utilized in teaching her. We did not notice this as we were busy in developing the editor.

To impress him, she used to write some programs.

As usual we all used to go for chai but this time Cyber was missing. He was also missing while having snacks.

One fine day some one in our group noticed him in the Anjaneya temple with Neha. He seldom used to visit temple. But now he was very regular bhakta.

Whenever he was with us in the evening, she would visit him in his room and take him away or rather he would walk away with her.

They used to visit all the temples in DVG. (this news we got from other engg. branch friends!!)

According to him (?) they were very good friends.

One fine day he entered into HQ and before knowing what happened, he started scolding all of us. The reason was that he had verified the editor developed by Neha and said that it was far better than any of our editors and his teachings had gone waste.

He even said that we all copied code from some one else in the college and she had coded herself and given extra ordinary features for the editor.

Everyday they used to go for a walk starting right from his room/ her house and circling entire MCC-B block. Some one or the other would notice them.

I had told him that in MCC-B block they have hung a board saying that Cyber and Neha not allowed and laughed loudly. He became very furious and stopped talking to me for couple of days. I had to offer some tea and snacks to patch up with him.

Neha picked him from his room (we were all present!) for temple and when he returned there was a teeka on his forehead. Some one said that, “Cyberrrrrrrrr, mereku nahi lagta ki……hehehe……… teeka …hehehe…tuuune … haath …. se lagaya hai” and we all laughed loudly including Cyber.

By this time, Linux had taught Love and quietly left!!

9. Canteen

We had a peculiar canteen at college.

There is small building with some space to stand and some to keep plates. There were 4-5 benches outside surrounded by trees. Having breakfast here was always endangered to crow's prasadam. We selected benches carefully.

Food was not all that great but still it was our favorite place.. ragging began there..friendships began...

There was a break from 10:00 am to 10:15 am for breakfast but we would extend time to 10:30 am. This was a fun packed place.

Somebody collected re 1 from each of us and had breakfast(cost was about Rs.3), some body used to stand with a spoon lifting tindi from each of our plate. And that ambodai, avalakki was everybody's favourite.

Once a mechanical engg. guy(forgot his name) was having tindi and was yelling at canteen server for not giving him chutney on avalakki, and dont know how the crow right above his head understood it, then there came..splach.....chutney on avalakki!!

Every body started laughing.

Friends of all branches met here and began chatting about the current hot news in the college.
This would include news varying from new Princi to be appointed to juniors who just entered college.

Tindi apart, mainly we all used to go canteen only to watch girls!! Needless to say that they were of IT branch.
great gals
We would never miss an opportunity to visit canteen. We would be waiting for the break and some free lectures which made us way for canteen....

..........Somebody stop me.......

somebody stop me

There was a Nandini canteen near by where we could get coffee of great taste. Every one started going there leaving our canteen. Coffee/tea in our canteen was bisi color neeru unlike at Nandinis.

On the way visiting Nandini, there is a Dental College. we would stand outside holding a cup of coffee watching people (yes, girls again!) coming out from the college.

Missing all the beautiful girls of DVG.
missing beauties

8. Adella sari, aadru yaake…

This was very common dialogue of Mr. S.

He was very mild, soft spoken person but was very irritating sometimes. Any new suggestions, doubts or even for the project consultation was answered like this.

Every body was planning for TechnoMania-2002 and so many suggestions and plans poured in. Alex designed the banner, Mr. S was unable to even read it and said “Adella sari, aadru..” and some explanation why he could not read it and also others cannot.

He used to teach CompGraph (Computer Graphics) and CompDesign (Compiler Design) were some of the very interesting subjects but he made them very boring and we almost slept in those classes. We began to hate those subjects, until only when we read it for our exams.

He taught us in MTech way, but we were not in that level bcoz we were in BE ;).

There was one Mr. Swamy (does any body remember him??) attender in lab. He used to dress up like one of our lecturer (first we thought he was a lecturer). He was responsible for all the activities in the lab like installations, discipline (??), etc.

To our horror, once he began to scream “virus, virus… ellaru computer shut down maadi”.

We came to know that some body had changed his usual standard Windows Theme to Jungle which used to show a flying insect when desktop was refreshed.

We laughed as loud as we could blow the roof of lab off!!

We asked him where did the virus come from, he answered that it could come from anywhere like air, water, etc..!!

Only intelligent person in our lab was our Mr. Chandru, ChandraKantha. He taught us Microprocessor programs. It should be first written in Microprocessor language and then converted into codes but he used to enter Microprocessor code directly!!

There were people with Master degree and did not know how to unzip a tar file!! Does any body remember Mtech Manja?? Yes he used to teach us how to do ppts!!

7. ...........Contd.

If BC did not get lunch/dinner in his room, he would just enter into our mess and request everybody for “mama guest mama, Don hakasale, Babu hakasale, Suni hakasale…..” !! usually none of us gave !! (but there was a reason for not giving “guest”, he would never used to invite us for food when our mess was not functioning!)

Then he had a plan for that. He used to get guest for meals and would find another person for chicken and some other for omelets/poaches.

After having lunch/dinner, in fact a heavy one, Don had an intension to reach room by auto !! he used to say “mama, auto mama ” !! While eating goose berries near the mess!!

Once a mess owner had warned us not to eat all of them but in vain. Then he began to say
Saar, at least let them grow”.

After every sems vacations when every body met, nobody asked the question “how are you” or “what you did in these holidays”. The only question asked was “what eatables did you bring”. Everybody was so keen on food. Just food !

Mahesh, Don, Alex, Ravi, Pundalik, Naik, Harry and me used to bring eatables in large quantity. This was meant to last for atleast 1 week according our Moms, but all this was eaten in no time. After having all these, we would go to mess for lunch !!

Mahesh, Don and me would bring avalakki, besan laddus and other variety of laddus with chakli. It would appear as if it was brought to keep in a sweet shop !! it was all for us !!

Once BC had 30 laddus all alone while watching a movie!!

20 laddus were too sweet which I brought and none ate more than one in HQ. I was feeling guilty but then Cyber came and said, “Kya Pack, laddu laya kya?” then I nodded. He ate all of those and again said, “kya Pack sirf itna hi laya kya?” !! HUFF!

Alex (babu) would bring cake, peda, chicken and lots of chocolates. But he seldom gave it anybody because it was not enough for his appetite !!

Alex and BC used to have all of the fish pickles and other non-veg items brought by Siju!

Having seen this, Ravi had brought 100 plus jamoons for us!! It was over within 5 mins !!
There still 4 jamoons left but then our friend Manohar was just passing by with girl friend, we invited him for remaining sweets.

Naik used to bring variety of eatables including banana chips, masala shenga and kobbari vada. But he used to inform us after the lunch/dinner, because he wanted to keep some sweets for himself and his roommates.

Only Pundalik used to bring strange things to eat ! like sugar cane, rottis and ground nuts straight from field !!

Harry had his own style of bringing kodbale every time !!
This repeated every sem.

Most interestingly some of us got a brilliant idea for having a good meal. We used to find out a new mess opened near by and would join that. Because in the new mess, we could get tuppa (ghee) for chapattis and rice including some obedient serving people.
This idea worked for a couple of months but got fed up and then came back to our Anjaneya Mess.

We had computer science FORUM in our college. We used to have boring lecture from some lecturers, then entertainment from students and then came our favorite round snacks!!

Once we had one full box of honey cakes and another box of veg- puffs!!

In entertainment section once Phoolan Devi chanted a disgusting poem on Mr. S!! which went something like “shreedhara..harihara.. davangere…” none remembers it but her!! One of seniors Laxman was so irritated that he stood up and screamed to take her away from stage!!

This is a never ending story of all Bheemas and Ghatodgajas………

6. Bheemas and Ghatodgajas !

Though we all used to assemble in HQ we stayed in different areas. And had food in various mess. Most of us entered Anjaneya Mess or the Medical mess as it is famously known as.

Pundalik and I stayed in hostel. In our mess, there was limited food two chapatti and limited rice. Even in house I could have had two chapattis and some rice with rasam and some more with curds. Same repeated even in hostel.

In all the other messes in Davangere, food was unlimited. One could have had unlimited chapattis and unlimited rice. As there was soda in Rice every one opted for chapattis or rotis.
Once in a while I would visit the Anjaneya mess with other friends as a guest. I had never seen people eating so much except once in “Rayara Mutt” in my place.

There would be Aaradhane in the Mutt and of course with lunch.

Once because of some inconvenience they had dropped a sweet item and announced the same before the first pankti started. Everybody had only rice (as there will be no chapattis or rotis here !!) with sambar, rasam and their combo. But suddenly there was an announcement that a sweet item was ready !! and lo and behold people who were about to finish their lunch sat again for the sweet item. Yes it was jalebi ! everyone ate as much as they could !! Somebody even complained of less sweet in jalebi !!

After this incident, I saw people eating this much in Anjaneya mess !! HUF !
There was one Mr. Thippesh, a server over there. He would never mind serving 10 chapattis per person and palya required !! his patience was remarkable !
The mess not only served chapattis and rice but also omelets and other egg items!!

Sunil, Mahesh, Alex(Anand),Cyber, Don used have 5 to 6 chapattis with rice and also ordered 1 or 2 omelets each for lunch!! Yes for lunch alone!

Sunday dinners here would not have chapattis but had only pulav. Alex and Cyber ate 1½ buckets of those. I heard there was a competition among them !!

We all shifted to Anjaneya Extension and HQ was very nearer to Harsha Mess. Everyone who was having food in Medical Mess shifted.

All of us liked the mess because of its cleanliness and quick serving of food. Everyday there would be a different palya unlike the former and phulkas were tasty and also served when hot.

It suited variety of people in our group.

Pritvi ate only phulkas and daal, where as Alex had only rice and daal !! Needless to say that Sunil, Don, Cyber and Mahesh had both the combo!!

One could also order for egg items or even chicken here !! a plus point indeed !!

They also served majjige which later became everybody’s favorite. All servers here had a peculiar name and were associated with the items they served and too in rhyming:

Chandru chapatti, Purushu palya, Ravi rice, Sir(mess owner) sambar and manju majjige!!

Everybody ate in competition. If Alex had two omelets, Don would order for three !!

After we all had finished our dinner and were waiting for Alex to finish, he used to say
“wait till I finish and will also join you” then he would order for some more rice !!

I can still remember some body even told that a cat would jump across his plate in order to cross!!

Another important thing to mention here is that in Harsha mess everybody was a great fan of cricket. Even pets (cats and dogs) in Harsha mess used to watch cricket !!

5. HQ and Mr. K

This sem we met very uninteresting Mr. K!

At first we thought he was very student friendly would give good marks in internal, but we were wrong. He gave marks only to girls !!

He never gave a lecture by himself !. He made us to give seminars. He had divided whole subject into some chunks. Each chunk was a seminar, as he called it. He would select students for seminars in his previous lecture. Prominent students for seminars were Ravi, Cyber, Sush, Pritvi and Sapna.

Whenever he used to give lecture but not more than ½ an hour or rather we did not allow him to give. We used to sing in chorus saying “saar saaku saar”.

We had lot of assignments in his subject and we wrote it bcoz he told it carried marks. But we never got marks for those.
First we used to write assignments on our own but he would never agree with our assignments and had many complaints with it and some how he managed not to give us marks.
Frustrated with this, we stopped writing assignments on our own in whole engg life!!
But whoever wrote the assignment and we just copied that (whatever he wrote!!).

All milkshake boys used assembled in one place Alex (Anand) and Pritvi’s room which we called HQ (yes, head quarters!!). Here we celebrated every thing !! Birthdays (at 12 o clock in night.), AC Boss!!(results), occasional blades to any bakraa.

For birthday celebration, one of us collected money from all HQ members (Of Course milkshake boys!) to bring cakes, veg puffs, aloo chips, gift to the birthday boy from Aahar 2000! If two birthdays clashed, celebration also included a dinner at Hide Out. After dinner, every body had at least two rounds of Milk shakes.

After birthday boy cuts the cake (we all would sing b’day song!!), Always Cyber used to divide it into exact equal pieces and distribute among us. But cyber would never get his piece of cake! Bcoz BC/Sunil/Mahesh would gulp it.

After all this, of course, next day birthday bumps to birthday boy!

Because of our birthday celebration styles we had disturbed HQ’s owners and shifted HQ to 2 or 3 places. But this never disappointed our birthdays celebrations !!

Occasional blades included mirchi, mandakki and chai !! BC and Cyber were never bakraas !

In mean while Mr K became close to Milkshake Boys. In fact he started staying in HQ. he used to accompany us where ever we went ! he was now present in every birthday parties (only Pritvi invited him) ! evening chai and mirchi-mandakki. But rarely paid for the celebrations !! Slowly he started coming to football sessions in morning.

We were movie buffs. We saw lot of movies, even more Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturday nights somebody got most famous 4-5 movies and night out! on most of the Sundays we slept and in evening we would divide cost of CDs amongst us and had chai.
We had evening chai in the corner shop which was near by the Anjaneya temple watching passers by (mostly girls who came to the temple!).

Only concern we had while watching movies was that Mr. K accompanied us here too. We could not enjoy as much we did in his absence.

This all became a routine. He (Mr. K) used to ask every day that if we had any movies store for the day or if we had any celebrations. In fact he had made a list of birthdays of ours and others.

Frustrated from this, Sunil and I decided not to show any movies to him. Any new movie CDs we brought was never shown to him. We watch them in the mid night and just deleted it if it was stored.

Another uninteresting person was Mr S.

4. The Milkshake Boys

This is third sem!! We entered into our computer branch!

Now onwards we had a comp sci syllabus and did not include sucking physics and chemistry.

There were total of 7 lectures in a day. 4 in mornings and 3 in afternoons. There were labs in afternoon.

First lecture was Data Structures taught by Hemappa, every one called him as Hems Bond !! but don’t know why! He was a typical lecturer with a khatras English! But, later we heard that he was recruited by Intel. It was good for us!!

Next lecture was Logic Design. The lecturer’s name was Anitha. We had not seen her before. Every senior called her “Sexy Anitha”. Why they did so? We knew it now!!
She would teach us like kids in kindergarten, wanted us to listen carefully and note down the notes which we hated. But still it was not boring bcoz of her!!

Next lecture was “Discrete Mathematical Structures (DMS)” taught by Indira (does any one of you remember subject and 3D‘s name??!!). She was very punctual. She would write so much on the board that too haphazardly, we never noted it down. But for this we paid in internal tests. She questioned everything she wrote. We wrote nothing in her tests!!

KrishnaMurthy used to call her 3D madam!!

There was another boring subject, electronics circuit and lecturer Nituvalli Anitha, We slept in almost all of her classes. Other details about her is uninteresting!!

Apart from these boring girls, some more beauties were added this sem !!

Sush, Sushmitha, was one of them. She talked to every one in the class and was friendlier towards us than others(other girls, to be specific !!). This was indigestible for our other classmate girls!!
Somebody even asked “avala figure chennagide antha maatadisteereno?

They were jealous of Sush !! (Girls, we know it !!)

Amongst such boring subjects and lecturers, we had a wonderful time.
Meanwhile some love stories sprouted. We all laughed at the very concept “Love” and its mere existence.

Wasim Raja, an unknown person in our class, was a good looking and also intelligent guy(after this incident , i dont think so!!). One fine day he created a scene in the class room by proposing Someone!. But we didn’t know one thing, how he got attracted towards her?! None could ever be attracted by our class girls!! But thank god!! His proposal was turned down.

Some more cases were just attractions.

We all planned trip to “Abbey falls”, and we came back groupism started. Whole class was divided into so many groups.(in fact, i never went to any of the trips!!)

Vikas, Smitha, Joshi, Swapna Shetty, Sowmya, Ragini, Ravi, Pritvi, Prashanth SC were into one group which we called as “FAMILY”.

Alex (Anand of “Ella maadbeku” mantra fame!), Mahesh (lambu), Pradeep (Puliyogare Don), BC (bitti !!), Vinay Naik (smart!) , Siju(mallu!), Sunil (police), Manja (chatri), Linga(linz), Praveen, VinayKrishna, Harish, Athul Shetty, Pundalik(sleeping boy), Rajesh, Choudary(rowdi ranganna!!)
-- comprised our group. We all had one common interest – Milk Shakes!!

Our priorities included movies, milkshakes, juices and food. None ever got time to think about a girl friend and proposing her. The concept of “Love” still made us laugh!!

We were MilkShake Boys!!

3. Longest 2nd semester

In this sem, we did nothing more other than that of 1st .

There were three peculiar guys, Vinay S, Wasim Raja and Maalur Manju, who were always late to classes. If class started at 9 am, then they would probably leave their room or get up at 9 am. After leaving room they would enter Anjaneya Mess, have breakfast and then if time permits they come to college. Probably they have never entered into 8 am class.

If Maalur Manja entered the class, then we would figure out that none else would enter after him. He used to come ½ hr late even for exams. But leaving the exam hall 15 mins earlier writing for 120 marks!! Where as we could not even complete for 80 or 90 marks !! super fast !!

BC and Siju stayed in hostel together, used to attend unknown marriage receptions(in Gundi Choultry!!) for food on Sunday nights when there was no food in the hostel. But Siju, being a mallu, did not know Kannada and never used to talk in marriage receptions. BC advised him not to talk and if by chance anybody gets doubt, just keep asking him time in Kannada, “time estu?”.

I think enjoyment was more than the limit, most of us flunked in one or two subjects. There was a famous saying in college that “M2 ellarigu Nantu”. And there was another deadly subject “Graphics”. Most of us flunked in the same subjects. I cleared Graphics at 6th sem !! that too by attending Siddeshwarappa’s tuitions with juniors (2005 batch)!!

That’s why it is the longest sem !! Also a shortest Blog to write !!

Hoped the next sem would be more interesting as we entered our branch !! Computers!!

2. 1st semester = 8 months

Our college was famous for postponing things. Actually we were lazy because of this reason. Anything our lecturers told would happen, it never did.

Due to our great seniors, our internal tests, classes were postponed. Sometimes even exams were postponed. We all were never ready for any internal tests because we knew they would be postponed. If by chance they did happen, we as always, could only score below average.

There were some classmates afraid not friends!! ( Gowda and Koppar) would mug up everything in the book and just vomit it in the tests. We used to make fun of them by saying that the Copy Write of the book should not be violated!!

Internal tests were for 25 marks. They got more internal marks, even 24 on 25 or out of out and still remain unsatisfied. We did not know how much more they wanted to pass the examinations.

If mugging was only the reason for getting more marks, we would not have minded but the “maska” that they applied to lecturers also had more part to play.

We would never do it!! at any cost, not even at the cost of internal marks!!

We just had coffee at Nandini and went to Lakshmi, Ankur mini theatres and had a wonderful time.

There were typical lecturers in the college.

Chemistry HOD (Mr. Durugappa) was one of them. He used to give notes in his organic chemistry class. It would include examples for insulators like green bucket, red bucket, rubber, etc, etc, “and finally this is used as an insulaaaator”.

Next was Manjappa. We called him “The Manjappa”, because he used “the” as suffix for everything like The Somashekar, the vidyanagar, etc. He had a typical way of asking time, used to say “take time”!!

There was a great computer lab in the college. Before entering into the lab, we had great expectations. It would have AC, one comp for each, color monitors, super fast CPUs etc, etc. But aadre alli nodidde bere. Five students per PC, black and white monitors, super slow CPUs with a table fan running all around. Fan was not for PCs or for students, it was for Netaji!!. He is an attender in comp lab!!

The lab did not even have proper seating arrangements. Everybody was sitting on stool and not chairs!! Once Pritvi was feeling sleepy in afternoon lab, he had a slip and fell down from his place!! Everybody started laughing at this poor chap. Even he started laughing. Then a dialogue from Netaji came as blow “Nee bidru paravagillapa , stool ge enu aagabardu”.

Exam time !!

VTU would finish their exams within a week, but in our college it took about 1½ months.

There were 15 days gap in between each exams. In this gap, we would start looking for text books and got Xeroxed, then went for a movie in Lakshmi or Ankur !! next day, all the portions for exams got marked for 100 marks. Then again for a movie. We spent 12 days like this. Last 3 days we spent studying the material. At last we would end up studying for 90 or 80 marks.

This is only our case !! not Gowda and Koppar ‘s . They would study for 150 marks which was maximum for sem.

After exams, there were 15 days vacations given. But we took 1½ months.

1. Meeting Everybody in College

College is the meeting place for friends!! Nothing more than that! Except for the laminated paper which we call as Degree Certificate !

From hostel, college campus was a walkable distance. We always walked to college, even it was late to classes (we don't mind missing classes!!).

We were going to attend our first class in Engg.!! it was feeling great!!

As usual it was an intro class. Our lecturer got introduced to his students. Everybody busy memorizing the girls' name.

But nobody went near to them and got introduced themselves!! Boy! Shy or What?

We later found nobody was as beautiful as expected in an Engg college ;) Easy !

Ragging was a normal thing in any Engg. or Medical college.

We were terrified to go near college canteen. But one day ragging did happened.

I never had thought that it would be so embarrassing. They were just questions nothing more ! But still....

Seniors called us near canteen. The ragging scene began:

we said "Hi"
they said "call us sir! dont you respect your seniors? Which branch?"
"Sir, computers"
"hmmmm, tell me your % in pre-university and ur sex together"
"sir, 86% male!"

Seniors began laughing hysterically and asked "what about the rest?" and again started laughing.

Next one was truely awkward(close your eyes and ears!!):

"Good hair ! which shampoo do u apply?"
wearing a smile, "Sir,clinic plus."
"And to your head?!!"

What the hell! This was truely embarrassing!

We had put down our head while they were laughing loudly. But victim(!) was furious and was staring at him. Suddenly senior shot at her,

"Staring? Eh?"
"..."
"Here",giving his id said," take my id and you can complain to princi!".Who had all that courage??

Just prayed to god asking to make them leave! "UUF!"

In our class of 60 members, some got only good marks, some only enjoyed and some enoyed their lives and got good marks.

We belonged to second category!! We just enjoyed our lives and cared a shit about our marks sheets!!

It was all well after a welcome party. But our bad days started from the day internal tests date were announced.

We wanted to enjoy our college days but these tests and practices would not just allow us.

Getting below average marks and sometimes averages in tests, we continued our journey of our engineering life.
